iTouch Goes From Maximum 16GB to 32GB

Flash memory is slowly beginning to increase in memory size as well as decrease in price. Granted there exists high flash memory technology, this may only be military grade and not available to the regular consumer. Even if it were, it would simply be highly expensive causing it to be a turn-off.

The 32GB iPod Touch has recently been released a couple of months ago causing a frenzy in the community of iPod fanatics. Prior to this release, the iPod Touch was available only in memory sizes of 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB.

We’ve recently got the chance to test out the Bose Portable Sounddock Digital Speaker System for all click-wheel Apple iPod models (including the iPhone).

We at iPod Nano Cases dot net mainly focus on reviewing products and accessories related especially to the Nano line of pods, but we wanted to broaden our horizons a little. By the way, the Bose Sounddock is very much compatible with all models of iPod Nanos.

Review of Bose Portable Sounddock

What in the box?

The Bose Portable Sounddock comes equipped with:

• rechargeable lithium-ion battery power pack
• A/C power cord adapter
• remote control (battery included)
• dock inserts
• User manual & setup instructions

Speakers Specifications

There are two models of the Bose Sounddock. The specific model we’re referring to is the Portable edition. The other model is the POD1. The difference between the two is that the Portable edition boasts a rechargeable lithium ion battery allowing you to play the Sounddock wire-free. The POD1 requires plug-in, and does not have the battery option.

The Sounddock’s dimensions are roughly 6″ x 14″ x 10″ (give or take a few .01″) making it fairly compact. It weighs in at an estimated 5 pounds. Five pounds isn’t that light, but we didn’t seem to mind…the weight of these speakers give it a sturdy feel.

Additional Features

The auxiliary input for an additional audio source come in handy, especially if you’ve got another portable electronic device such as a portable dvd player or perhaps a PSP…imagine Bose-quality sound while you watch movies or play video games while riding in the car, at the beach lying on the sand, or anywhere that isn’t at the comfort of your own home.

We’ve already made mention of the remote control, but what we’ve failed to bring out is that it’s about the size of a credit card. This may not be such a great thing, though…We’ve already managed to misplace it several times in a period of less than a month.

Sound Quality

Given the fact that we are in no way expert audio connoisseurs, we firmly believe that this set of stereo Bose Speakers lives up to the branding and quality that is the very legacy of Bose. These babies deliver rich and deep tones, and easily fills any room with amazing sound.

Bose has done a wonderful job of packing big sound into such a little package, so do not let the size and dimensions of the Sounddock deceive you. We’ve tested these iPod speakers both indoor in large and small rooms, as well as outdoor. It performs well in all the former conditions and circumstances.

The Sounddock received R&B/Hip-Hop, Country, Rock, and Classical music genres very well in both low and high volumes. Bass, midtones, and treble all were well-enunciated even when the volume was turned up rather high. I should point out, though, that if you’re a big fan of bass and you perhaps would even choose it over overall performance and clarity, this is not the iPod speaker system for you.

Likes

We’ve already made it quite clear that we love the Sounddock’s sound quality and portability.

As far as looks and aesthetic appeal is concerned, the Portable Sounddock has a sleek, modern and luxurious appearance. We can almost guarantee that you will love how these speakers look. We have the Sounddock in Gloss Black. We’ve seen it in white also, but afraid that little fingers might get to it and stain it with food and dirt, we decided that black was the way to go for us.

The Sounddock charges your iPod while it plays without any additional cables or instruments, and even when it’s running on battery and not plugged in. This is definitely a plus, but we suggest that you undock your iPod after you’re done listening to music (and if you do not wish to further charge your iPod) as leaving it in drains the Sounddock’s lithium ion battery.

Dislikes

We had to think long and hard about what we don’t like about the Bose Portable Sounddock system. Well, we could only come up with one thing…

The A/C adapter on the power cord is very bulky, and figuring out how to assemble it took a bit of a while. This wasn’t a big issue as common sense will eventually lead you to the proper assembly (takes just two very simple steps) as it did us. If not common sense, the user’s manual will…we’re not very big fans of reading instructions hehe.

Pricing

The Bose Portable Sounddock retails for $399.00. If you’re familiar with buying Bose products, you probably already know that the chances of getting it any cheaper or on sale is slim to none.

If the Portable version’s price is a little too steep for you, the Bose Sounddock POD1 retails for $269.00 making it a tad bit more affordable.

We realize that it’s quite a bit of cash to spend on an iPod speaker system, but that’s the Bose brand for you. Many believe that Bose products are overpriced. However, there is reason why people still purchase their products…the quality is outstanding, and that is the price that quality is paid for.

Extra Protection | ToughSkin Now Comes with Separate Screen Protector

The difference with the new third generation case is that it comes with a separate screen protector. This was not made available in previous versions. We believe that this is a great extra benefit, as most are also worried about protecting the mp3 player’s screen from scratches and such also.

If you own a 3G nano, you are very much aware of how small this device actually is…any smaller and it might disappear. Adding the rubberized case on your device does, in effect, make your iPod a bit bigger…However, we do not consider this bulky as the 3G is very small.

As far as aesthetic appeal goes, this case is nice to look at…that’s just our personal opinion, though. Take a look at the photograph above, and you be the judge of what looks nice or not. If you are concerned as to how it looks in a different color, we’ll include a picture of the ToughSkin in black…see the picture below.

Want to take your Apple iPod Nano with you in the swimming pool? No problem. Want to take your Apple iPod Nano with you in the water while sailing, kayaking, swimming, or in the shower? Again, absolutely no problem. The EGO 25906033 Waterproof Case comes with built-in speakers which are also enclosed tightly and securely in the clear acrylic-like case (as seen in the above picture).

With the proper use of the Ego Sound Case, you can take your iPod in up to 3.3 feet of water. However, please do take into consideration that although the case is waterproof, it can only handle the water pressure of up depths of 3.3 feet of calm water. Surfing/bodyboarding (anything that deals with waves or rougher water), white-water rafting, and the like is NOT recommended as it can result in damage to your electronic device.

Don’t have waterproof ear/headphones? Once again, no problem. No ear/headphones required to use your iPod with this case because the built in speakers allow you to crank up your tunes for everyone to hear.

The speaker sound quality is pretty good (although don’t expect it to be comparable to Bose, or even Altec Lansing), and the speakers are somewhat louder than you’d expect coming from such a small thing. If you’re not an audiophile, you will probably be quite pleased with the sound.

As you can see in the picture, the EGO is one of the larger enclosures for iPods, but this is to be expected as it contains speakers. This one isn’t made to strap to your arm or anything like that. We like to think of it as a Sonic portable speaker system that you can take with you in the water.

As far as price goes, we believe it to be a fair deal. Not very cheap, but not very expensive. As most of us here are avid beach-goers, the EGO is quite appealing and fits perfectly to our lifestyle.

The Belkin F87060 Sports Sleeve for iPod Nano is the perfect no frills, no nonsense armband for the athlete, the casual pedestrian, or just someone who wants a secure no-hands hold on their iPod Nano.

The silicone case is a perfect snug fit for either the 1st or 2nd generation iPod Nano. Included with the silicone case is a velcro armband and a clear screen protector.

iPod Nano Cases dot net has tested this with a 2nd generation iPod Nano 4GB version. We’ve worn it while running, playing in the sand at the beach, working in the house and yard, and taking a casual stroll around the block. The Belkin Sports Sleeve and armband stays in place where you’ve originally strapped it to your arm. It’s fairly comfortable, lightweight, and not at all bulky.

The Belkin Sports Sleeve is available in colors white and black (as seen above).

The white version ($9.99) is somewhat translucent…very nice, but we should warn you it stains a bit easily. When iPod Nano Cases dot net took it to a bonfire at the beach, the case was somewhat stained from the smoke from the fire. But, no worries if you don’t plan on taking it there or anywhere in the mud and dirt.

The black version ($8.75) is also nice, less susceptible to staining, and a little over a buck cheaper than the white version at Amazon.

There’s a reason why Speck call this line of cases ToughSkin. Made of thick and very durable silicone, Speck’s ToughSkin case gives your iPod ruggedized dropproof and scratchproof protection. However, the ToughSkin dropproof protection is no match for the Otterbox Armor Waterproof Case.

The Speck ToughSkin case fits nice and snug on your iPod, although iPod Nano Cases dot net should make note to you that you do need to take the case off before docking your iPod. However, you can plug things into the audio jack (that’s a given, but we put that in there just in case you were wondering) and the bottom opening.

We tried plugging an iPod into the iPod cable for a Sony car stereo receiver with the Speck ToughSkin case on, and the iPod cable would not stay on. However, this particular iPod cable seemed a little unsual, so we wouldn’t doubt that it should work fine with most other cables and adapters with the ToughSkin case on.

It takes as little as fifteen seconds to install on your iPod.

The Speck ToughSkin adds just a little bulk to your iPod Nano, but not too much to be worried about. The case is a rather attractive one and available in bright and vivid colors (in addition to clear and black).

No need to hide the original color of you iPod Nano…Belkin makes it easy to show off your sleek portable mp3 player and protect it at the same time. The clear case is made of hard acrylic, and comes with a clip.

This clear case offers scratchproof protection, but we steer clear of dropping this one. The acrylic that this product is made of is not designed to take well to drops and falls. It may crack in the event that it is dropped on a hard surface.

Other than that, the case fits very snugly on the iPod, and is quite easy to install.

The Belkin F8Z130 offers full coverage, as you can see in the photograph above, yet easy access to the devices clickwheel.

The only annoyance with this case is that only Apple stock iPod headphones (OEM…the ones that come bundled with the mp3 player in the box) fit in the opening for the audio jack. I have another set of earphones that I bought (Sony Fontopia) that will not fit with it. Oh well…Other than that minor issue, it’s a great see-thru case.
